Making Fossil Fuel Market Green!

For years now there are researches and investments that are dedicated to find new ways to reduce fossil fuel negative impact on the world's environment by finding alternatives fossil fuels. But is that enough and will that be applicable in the next 10-15 years? So why not try to make fossil fuel industry more efficient, less polluting and greener market? What will be the impact of that on the environment?

As it is known fossil fuel market is a huge market that is estimated to be of hundreds of billions of dollars so it will make sense to apply some enhancements to this market that will make it more environmental friendly to earth. But how can this be done?

Please note that we are not going to refer to the automobile industry as we think that it needs a totally different article, nor we are going to refer to factories for example plastic factories (though we might consider dedicating an article or more about these things). In this article we are going to look at the industry from the point these fossil fuels are extracted from the earth to the point they are delivered to produce energy.

In this industry there are many process that are applied and so there is a need to work on each process to make it more efficient or at least become less polluting.

Reducing The Environmental Impact Of Scrap Cars: A Good Thing

In the throwaway society of today, litter and pollution have become one of the biggest problems faced by mankind. Recent years have seen the advent of green organizations that advocate recycling and friendlier environmental practices. Landfill sites have many disadvantages and pose a big threat to the ability of the planet to survive. Scrap cars too, can become an environmental threat. The solution lies in finding ways to reuse materials.

Vehicles that end up in waste yards come from various different sources. Many vehicles that were involved in serious accidents can never be repaired again. In some cases, vehicle owners realize that it is no longer viable to repair old automobiles. Police also regularly find abandoned vehicles. Local authorities also endeavor to minimize the clogging of landfill sites by selling bulky objects as waste.

The fact that a vehicle can no longer be used for transportation does not make it useless. Automobiles can often be harvested for useful parts. Second hand spare parts have become a huge industry, especially among auto owners that enjoy working on their own vehicles. Those parts that cannot be harvested are still valuable. Almost all the parts and components can be recycled. Furthermore we all know that having recycled metals is far less power consuming than extracting these metals from there ores. As the  latter needs mining for the ores , which has a devastating impact on the environment, and the separation of that metal form the ores needs the application of processes that consume huge amounts of energy and produces polluting gases as a byproduct of these processes.

Individual sellers need to take care when they sell a vehicle to a waste dealer. Many unscrupulous dealers offer very small amounts and some will even charge for towing the vehicle. It may be well worth it to try and remove all useful and working components before selling the automobile. In this way more revenue can be gained.

Thus one of the best reasons for recycling old and useless vehicles is that it makes economic sense in every way. As Raw materials gained through recycling are almost always cheaper than the production of new ones. The industry provides thousands of jobs and opportunities. Many local authorities have also been able to make significant cost savings by eliminating these solid wastes from landfills.

As the recycling of vehicles holds significant advantages for the environment. This process produces much less water, air and soil pollution than mining (which I think is something that needs to be made more environmental friendly by any means necessary). With efficient and modern recycling techniques, the reuse of materials from old cars can supply a great portion of the automotive industry needs. As recycling also helps reduce pressure on other resources like  water and fuel, so any action to reduce pressure on the environment can have far reaching benefits for everyone.

There are also other uses for old vehicles. Where many creative people have used them to create interesting play environments for youngsters. They are sometimes even used for training purposes. A popular line of retro furniture is created entirely from defunct vehicles. In addition artists have used them to produce interesting and innovative works of art.

Any action that helps reducing the abuse of the environment is beneficial to mankind. Thus scrap cars can have a potentially disastrous effects upon the environment (if left in landfills), but they can similarly provide numerous benefits to a wide variety of people (if recycled and reused). So an attitude of reuse and recycling can eventually play a large role in the survival of the planet.

Passenger Cars Contribute to Environmental Pollution

Automobile pollution is the amount of emissions produced by different automobiles running on roads. Increasing levels of air pollution from these automobiles especially passenger cars have become a real threat to the Indian populace as well as the environment.

In India, commercial vehicles and passenger cars are believed to contribute maximum to environmental pollution. Today, as the awareness of people regarding environmental pollution is consistently increasing, they are gathering up ways and measures to control pollution especially that from passenger cars.

Indian car manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Honda are continuously working on greener technologies to help keep the environment clean and give a green world to their valued customers as well as the others in the country who don't even own cars.

Common Car Pollutants

The key component responsible for car pollution is the combustion engine. Getting the combustion engine in a car going requires a mixture of air and fuel to be burnt within the engine's cylinders. The petrol used in this mixture is composed of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxide. The unburnt quantity of these gases in the combustion engine emit out as pollutants.

Car pollution is increased further if the car is not tuned and maintained properly. The car should be regularly checked and maintained in order to keep the emission levels at minimum.

Key car pollutants that have a negative effect on the environment are:

  • Carbon Monoxide: Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas produced in the internal combustion engine. More of this poisonous gas is produced if the air to fuel ratio is low. The key factor responsible for increased production of carbon dioxide is irregular maintenance of car engine. It is also said that cars produce about 90% of the total carbon monoxide content that majorly contributes to environmental pollution.
  • Nitrogen Oxide: Nitrogen reacts with oxygen atoms when there is high pressure and high temperature. Both these atoms react together to form nitrogen oxide that is one of the most harmful gases for both the environment as well as human. These are also believed to contribute to acid rain formation and about 72% to global warming.
  • Hydrocarbon: These are composed of hydrogen and water and are produced during combustion. Composed of different molecular weight substances, these often pose a great risk to human as well as the environment.
Long Term Solutions

Modern cars use catalytic convertors to reduce emissions from passenger cars. At present, the situation is gradually taken care of by these convertors but long term solutions will have to be conceived to have a safer environment.
Innovative new technologies are paving the way for alternative sources of fuels that produce lower emissions. The recent trend includes the usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and
Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). For the future, car manufacturers are also eyeing water and air as possible sources of energy to drive cars.
